Background of the Study
Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) play a significant role in maternal and child health, particularly in rural communities where access to modern healthcare is limited (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). In Kebbi State, TBAs are often the first point of contact for pregnant women, providing care, guidance, and cultural support throughout pregnancy and childbirth (Olawale et al., 2023). Given their influence, TBAs can play a crucial role in promoting maternal nutrition and ensuring better pregnancy outcomes.
Previous studies have highlighted the importance of maternal nutrition in reducing complications such as low birth weight, preterm births, and maternal mortality (Bello et al., 2024). However, the extent to which TBAs integrate nutrition education into their practice remains uncertain. This study investigates how TBAs contribute to maternal nutrition awareness and the challenges they face in delivering effective nutritional guidance.
Statement of the Problem
Despite growing awareness of the importance of maternal nutrition, malnutrition remains a significant issue among pregnant women in Kebbi State (Aliyu & Ojo, 2024). Many women rely on TBAs for pregnancy care, yet these attendants may lack formal training in nutrition education. There is limited research on the role of TBAs in promoting maternal nutrition, and this study seeks to assess their impact and identify barriers to effective nutrition counseling.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the role of traditional birth attendants in promoting maternal nutrition.
To evaluate the nutritional knowledge of TBAs and their influence on maternal dietary choices.
To identify challenges affecting the integration of nutrition education into TBA practices.
Research Questions
How do traditional birth attendants contribute to maternal nutrition awareness?
What is the level of nutritional knowledge among TBAs, and how does it influence maternal dietary choices?
What challenges hinder the effective integration of nutrition education into TBA practices?
Research Hypotheses
Traditional birth attendants play a significant role in promoting maternal nutrition awareness.
TBAs with higher nutritional knowledge provide better dietary guidance to pregnant women.
Limited training and resources hinder the effectiveness of TBAs in delivering nutrition education.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the role of TBAs in maternal nutrition in Kebbi State. Limitations include variations in TBA knowledge and practices, cultural factors influencing dietary beliefs, and difficulties in accessing remote communities for data collection.
